Which Social API

How we review and rank

We regularly review and update our scores and rankings. Each one draws on our own analysis of what a product does, feedback from the people who use it and information from the provider, and, once we’ve run them, live tests of its API.

We never accept money in exchange for a higher ranking or a better review.

What goes into a score

No single source tells the whole story, so every score combines several. Where one tells us something the others can’t confirm, we say where it came from.

Our own analysis

We sign up, read the docs, work through the dashboard and features, and compare plans and pricing line by line. For example: which Instagram fields each API returns, and which plan you’d need for 100,000 profiles a month.

Live API testing

We’re adding live tests: real requests to each API, checking whether they work, how fast, and whether the numbers match the live platform. Until they’re in, scores rest on the other three sources. For example: spot-checking follower counts against what Instagram shows at the same moment.

Feedback from users

Developers and marketers who use these products tell us what works and what breaks over months, which a review on its own can’t show. For example: reports of an endpoint failing for a week, or support going quiet.

Information from providers

Providers can tell us about pricing, features and changes. We check what we can, and say so when something comes from the provider alone. For example: a new plan or endpoint, confirmed by trying it before it changes a score.

How we keep rankings current

APIs change all the time: prices move, endpoints break, new features ship. We revisit every category on a regular cycle, and sooner when something changes.

  1. 1Regular reviewEvery category is revisited on a fixed cycle, so no ranking goes stale.
  2. 2A provider ships a changeNew pricing, a new endpoint, or a removed feature triggers a fresh look.
  3. 3Users report a problemIf several people tell us something has broken, we check it ourselves.
  4. 4A new provider launchesWe review it and fit it into the ranking where it belongs.
  5. 5Someone challenges a resultWe recheck and correct publicly if we were wrong.

Every ranking, review and comparison shows when it was last reviewed, and keeps a log of what changed.

How we score

Every score out of 10 is our judgement, not the output of a formula. We weigh what we’ve measured, what we’ve found using the product, what users tell us and what providers say, and every review explains its score.

These are the things we look at. Where we’ve measured something, like success rate or price, the number sits next to our verdict so you can make up your own mind.

  • ReliabilityHow often a request comes back complete and correct.
  • AccuracyHow close the numbers are to what the platform shows live.
  • CoverageWhich data types and fields it returns.
  • PriceWhat it costs per 1,000 results on the cheapest plan you can start on.
  • SpeedHow long a typical request takes.
  • Ease of useDocs, SDKs, trial, support and what users tell us.

Reading a score

9+Excellent. Few or no weak spots.
8–8.9Strong, with a clear trade-off somewhere.
7–7.9Usable, if its weak area matters less to you.
Under 7Significant problems in our review.

Money and our rankings

We never accept money in exchange for a higher ranking or a better review.

Not from the providers we cover, not from anyone else. A provider can’t buy a position, a score, a review or a change to what we’ve written.

Providers don’t approve what we writeThey can send information and point out errors, but they don’t see reviews before publication or sign them off.
Commercial links are disclosedIf we ever earn money from a link or partnership, the page says so, and it has no effect on scores or rankings.
We say where information came fromWhen a claim rests on a provider’s word rather than our own checks, the page says so.

What our scores can’t tell you

They’re not a lab benchmark. Scores reflect how a product serves a typical team, not how it performs at very high volumes.

Some things can’t be checked. Where there’s no public ground truth, like audience demographics without creators’ own data, we say how confident we are.

Enterprise prices differ. We compare public plans. Negotiated deals can be much cheaper.

We don’t audit legality. We link to what providers say about how they collect data, but we don’t verify it.

Corrections and disputes

Providers can challenge anything we’ve written. So can readers. Every confirmed mistake is fixed and logged publicly, on the page it affected and here.
